Granite Gorge to Karumba

We are currently off line camped at the Undarra Lava Tubes We are finally getting great weather, warm sunny days 0% humidity & very cool nights, it feels great to be inland.

This post should include our latest drone video of Granite Gorge. I have no idea when we will once again have an internet connection to post to the blog. Perhaps we will get a connection at Normanton where we will be catching the Gulflander train to Croydon where we will spend the night at the pub before catching the train back to Normanton to pick up our vehicles & caravans.

We have been away from home for 2 months now & we still have quite a long distance to go even though the Northern territory leg of this trip has been abandoned due to time constraints. We should get to Karumba & hopefully out to Boulia, but nothing is set in stone. Sadly we will miss Rockos’ birthday on the 10th of July.

A few more days have passed since writing the above paragraph, we are now camped in the bush near some unknown creek between Croydon & Normanton. We spent a night at Einsleigh river & one night at Georgetown. A bit of a worry at Einsleigh as the water was clean & clear we decided to put the kayak in the water & I had a swim in the lovely clear water. In the morning we found the drag marks & foot prints of an enormous croc which had emerged from the water about 20 metres from where I was swimming. The shop keeper where we got a gas bottle in Georgetown said you should definitely not swim there because of the crocs. It won’t happen again. On the bright side, I did a nice drone video which should also appear below if we ever get an internet connection.

More days have passed & we are now in Karumba & watched the sun set over the Gulf of Carpentaria, followed by dinner at the animal bar at Karumba hotel, & a bike ride the following morning.

We are now in Normanton & will be heading out for a 2 day trip on the Gulflander tomorrow morning.

Lots of pics & videos.

Undara base from the rocks on the bluff.

At Einsleigh river, some really big tracks, I think it was some kind of bird.

It was beautiful, but a little croc infested.

We did not know about the crocs until next morning.

The big croc tracks leading out of the water where I was swimmming the previous afternoon.

Our camp.

Here are a couple of photos from Georgetown where we spent 1 night & had dinner at the golf club.

These couple of pics at some place we camped in the middle of nowhere & had a good time shooting Yvonnes' machine gun.

The lake near the Cumberland chimney.

The Chimney.

Gilbert river, we camped here on a previous trip.

Another pic from Croydon.

Cooling off in the pool at Karumba.

There were a few Brolgas wandering around the Karumba caravan park & hundreds on the road in.

Corellas on the fuel storage.

Whats left of the watime flying boat jetty at Karumba.

Large areas of stone made entirely of compressed shells.

Karumba beach, waiting for sunset.

It was worth the wait.

Another shot of the flying boat jetty.

The wide wartime ramp where the Catalinas were hauled out of the water. It now has a new floating pontoon down the middle.
